Restoration Process for Antique and Historic Stained Glass
Our revolutionary restoration process can add another century or more to your stained glass’ lifespan. We begin restoration with an onsite assessment of your stained glass. One of our experts visits your property to evaluate the root causes of damage, create a cost-benefit analysis, and provide an appraisal, timeline, and estimate. This assessment is crucial and is required to make proper quotes.
When your assessment is completed and you decide to move forward with the restoration process, we’ll remove your stained glass windows and install temporary windows while we transport your stained glass back to our local studio. Once your stained glass reaches our studio, we’ll have it soaked in a special cleansing solution for up to two weeks. This bath removes all of the impurities and dirt that have built up over the last century while also enabling us to deconstruct the window piece by piece for the next step.
We safely dispose of the lead came that supports your window while keeping the pieces of glass that remain in good condition. We replace all broken or damaged pieces from our expansive inventory of over 10,000 pieces of glass. If your stained glass has painted glass elements, one of our artists will replicate the damaged pieces and fire them in our kiln. Once all glass components are restored, we create a new lead came and set the stained glass with black cement. When the cement has dried, we polish your stained glass and install a clear piece of protective glass if necessary. We’ll remove your temporary windows and install your newly restored stained glass windows. The process can take up to a month for each stained glass window due to all the components and labor intensive work.
