In fact, some of the oldest stained glass windows in the world are over a thousand years old! But even the sturdiest of windows may begin to show signs of deterioration over time. Our Renovation Process

Stained glass remodeling and renovation is a very technical and detail oriented process. As such is the case, it’s also a procedure that should only be carried out by an experienced stained glass studio. At Stained Glass Austin, we have an extensive amount of knowledge and practice in restoring aging, broken, and antique stained glass. We use the following process on every project to generate beautiful results every time:

Removal: The panel is carefully removed and brought our studio in Austin. A piece of temporary glass is installed in its place for insulation, safety, and protection from the elements.

Cleaning: Next, the stained glass must be soaked in a bath of gentle cleansing solution to remove the presence of dirt or grime. This process can last for up to two weeks.

Disassembly: A blueprint is created for reference and then the panel is taken apart piece by piece.

Replacement: All broken pieces of glass are exchanged with new glass of a matching color from our personal inventory.

Reconstruction: The panel is pieced back together. New leading and cement are added in place of the old. Steel bars may also be attached if necessary for extra reinforcement.

Installation: The only thing left to do is return the glass to its original site where it is reinstalled. We fit a piece of low-e safety glass over the panel for additional protection. The restoration is officially complete!
