Adding stained glass to your existing windows
When installing stained glass, one of our favorite installation methods is to add it to the inside of an existing window so you can keep the insulating properties. Stained Glass Austin uses several different installation methods, depending on the location of the stained glass panels, but this the most common one we choose, applicable in approximately 75% of all our installations. Adding your new stained glass right to the inside of the existing window is a fantastic method for a few different reasons.
1. By adding stained glass to your existing windows, you can achieve the look you want without replacing the entire window. When it comes time to sell your home, there is no need to leave your stained glass art behind. You can simply remove the Stained Glass Austin panels and move them to your new home along with all your other art and furnishings.
2. By bonding the stained glass panels to the existing clear pane of glass, you effectively create a double paned glass from a single. As we mentioned, this gives the window much better insulating ability.
3. By installing the new stained glass to the old window, instead of removing that window, you have a protective layer of glass that shields your lovely, new, custom-designed and hand built stained glass artwork from the elements. This will keep it looking pristine for that much longer, and our installation also ensures that no dirt or dust will get in between the stained glass and the original glass. Of course, to use this method, your original glass needs to be in good condition. If it is pitted or cracked or chipped, you might want to consider replacement glass.
4. If you are having stained glass installed in a place with a high moisture content, such as a bathroom window or a shower door, we will sandwich it in between the existing glass panes and another new clear glass pane, to protect it from the corrosive effects of all that moisture on the lead caming.
So as you can see, installation makes a difference to Stained Glass Austin and our specially trained installers. Some of the other things we do when we install your windows are to use a specially-developed bonding tape to adhere the panel to the existing window. Once that is done, we will add a small bead of caulking around the entire edge of the window. This has two purposes. One is to match the color of the existing trim and or window frame, so it has a smooth, professional appearance. The other reason, as we mentioned before, is to help ensure that dust doesn’t get behind the stained glass.
At Stained Glass Austin, we have over two decades of experience with stained glass window installations of all sizes, in all different areas of the home or office space. You can trust us to use the most effective stained glass installation technique for your project. Your satisfaction is guaranteed!
